New Paltz College, better known as the State University of New York at New Paltz, or SUNY New Paltz for short, is a public college found in New Paltz, New York. It began in 1828 as the New Paltz Classical School; a secondary education school that was updated into an academy in 1833. The school is one of only four SUNY schools found in the New York metropolitan area.
The school was established in 1828 but began in 1885 as the the New Paltz Normal and Training School to help train and prepare teachers to teach in the public schools of New York. In 1938, it was allowed to baccalaureate degrees and it was renamed as the State Teachers College at New Paltz. The first class of the school in 1942 had 112 graduating students. The college was rebranded in 1994 as the State University of New York at New Paltz.
The new Paltz campus is located in 350 acres of land in New Paltz, New York. The campus features 13 residence halls, found in the middle of two quads. The main campus also features 24 academic buildings, including a gymnasium and sports areas, the Haggerty Administration Building, a lecture hall, a Student Union Building, Old Main, the Sojourner Truth Library, and one main dining hall. The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art is found in the center of the campus.
New Paltz College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The Hawks compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference or SUNYAC. The school fields teams in several sports including baseball, field hockey, basketball, softball, cross country, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis, and swimming & diving.
